Did you know?

In the 1790s speculative builders moved into Southernhay to develop housing for the gentry. Nosworthy and Hooper were two of the best and gave an immediate air of respectability to Southernhay. But no houses had sanitation at that time. In 1821 a grand neo-classical bathhouse was built on the corner of Southernhay and Dix’s field, using a natural spring which had been found on the site.

What is Southernhay House?

SH began as a mission to return a classic Grade II* Georgian townhouse into a place where people meet, entertain and enjoy themselves. Within a short time, in 2011, and using independent, local contractors, the project was realised.

We offer the best we can find, in food, team-work, service and atmosphere, in the hope that you will enjoy being our guest. We have researched and tuned into the personality of the House to bring you closer
to the gregarious and glamorous Georgians, with a touch of repressed Victoriana, a fizz of Colonialism and lashings of modern comfort.

With just 10 bedrooms, a night at Southernhay is a personal experience, like having your own club in town. Our Bar, Restaurant and Private Dining Room are simply the former grand salons of the original house and so are elegant and intimate in style, with limited covers and friendly, unhurried service.
