Spice is the truly global commodity, used and traded in all continents. It grew in modern Europe through demand for black pepper and, after Vasco de Gama opened the Spice Route from Europe to the Indian Ocean via the Cape of Good Hope in 1498, Europe took control of the market. Portugal’s head start faded against the aggressive tactics of the British and Dutch East India Companies and by the 19th C British interests were firmly rooted in India and Ceylon while the Dutch held control over most of the remainder of the “East Indies”.
