Did you know?

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, the British East India Company bought Opium from Indian producers to sell on the black market into China or to trade for luxury goods such as tea and silk, greatly in demand in Western Europe. Debate raged at the Chinese court as to whether to legalise and tax the product or ban it... culminating in two “Opium Wars” between 1839 and 1860 when the Chinese tried to stamp out the trade and were defeated by British expeditionary forces... from this was born Hong Kong.
