The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital was built in Southernhay in 1742 (now relocated) at the southern end, while opposite in the Southgate Mercure Hotel Car park was the Trinity Burial yard.
During the 1832 cholera outbreak, some of the victims were buried in the yard until a riot broke out as people believed that the corpses were being buried alive (as well they may have been).
